Costume designer Ruth Carter won her first Academy Award, cementing her place in Oscar history, as the first African American woman to win in the category.
Having been previously nominated for her work on MALCOLM X and AMISTAD, Carter joyfully accepted her gong and even acknowledged friend, former collaborator, and now fellow Oscar winner Spike Lee, saying “Wow, this has been a long time coming. Spike Lee, thank you for my start. I hope this makes you proud!”
Ms. Carter’s win was not the only historic win for the BLACK PANTHER team! Bringing home the Oscar for Production Design were the duo of Jay Hart and Hannah Beachler, who became the first African-American to be nominated for – and win – in this category. In her deeply moving acceptance speech, Beachler said “I am stronger because of Marvel, who gave me the opportunity to do my best, who supported the vision of this film and lifted us up every day.”
